University of Santiago de Compostela
University Information, Campus and History
(Santiago de Compostela, Spain)
The University of Santiago de Compostela is located in Santiago de Compostela city in the Spanish region of Galicia. With a history spanning more than 500 years, it is one of the region's oldest universities.
The university traces its roots back to 1495 when a local solicitor collaborated with the abbot of the San Martiño Piñeiro monastery to create a school for the underprivileged called the Gramatic Academy. Based in the San Paio de Antealtares monastery, the Gramatic Academy initially offered four courses: grammar and arts, medicine, and theology. Most students of the grammar and arts programme furthered their studies by taking up law, with a special focus on ecclesiastical law. The university eventually broke away from the influence of the Catholic Church and reorganised itself into a state-run public university.
Today, the University of Santiago de Compostela has a student population of over 40,000, mostly undergraduates, and a faculty staff of more than 2,000. It has a total of 25 faculties distributed between the main campus at Santiago de Compostela and the ancillary campus at Lugo. These faculties are:
